Why is Rice Dream so good for those with food sensitivities?
One of the major advantages of rice is that it is a hypoallergenic food, unlike soya, so it is highly unlikely to cause any digestion problems or cause an allergic reaction. If someone in your family is allergic to milk or soya, then Rice Dream is the perfect alternative. And due to its easy digestibility Rice Dream is soft on sensitive stomachs, allowing you to enjoy all the versatility of a milk-type product without the adverse digestive effects that cow’s milk or soya can sometimes have. This makes Rice Dream ideal for anyone who is lactose intolerant.
Naturally good - for everyone.
Even for those who can tolerate lactose and milk protein, Rice Dream is a healthy and delicious option. The mild sweetness of the rice is naturally produced through the sugars in the rice, so no sweeteners need to be added (apart from our irresistibly indulgent chocolate flavour). Also, a stamp of approval from the Vegetarian Society means that Rice Dream can be fully enjoyed by vegetarians and vegans.
Rice Dream is available in five flavours: Original Organic, Calcium-enriched, Vanilla, Chocolate, and Hazelnut & Almond. Whichever one you choose, it’s the naturally good alterative!
Rice Dream is a pioneering brand that produced the first commercial rice milk product in the United States and the United Kingdom. Robert Nissenbaum, the founder of Rice Dream, cared deeply about the relationship between diet, health, wellbeing and the environment.
So in 1971 at the age of just 20 years old, Robert Nissenbaum opened Morning Dew, a pioneering organic health food store and restaurant in the American Mid-West. He has since moved on from those humble beginnings and helped turn Imagine Foods into an international success story.
He experimented in store kitchens with new concepts for health foods and in 1982 the Rice Dream brand was born offering consumers a lactose-free alternative to soya and milk.
The brand was initially only sold in natural food stores, supported through tastings, and it grew through word
of mouth.
By the mid 90’s the United Kingdom was ready for Rice Dream where it was initially sold exclusively through the health food trade. Rice Dream’s popularity has led to increased distribution which has directly resulted in the brand growing in the UK.
Every single grain of rice that can be found in Rice Dream can be traced back to our selected growers in Po Valley, Northern Italy; a place so fertile that it is one of the only places in Europe suitable for growing rice, due to the high temperatures, and access to water.
We insist on a great level on traceability, which the local growers can provide for us. On top of this,
using Po Valley rice greatly reduces the number of miles the rice has to be travel, thereby minimising our ecological footprint.
Once the rice is cooked, the insoluble matter is mechanically filtered out. Amylase enzymes from malted barley are then added to break down the starch in the rice into complex carbohydrates and natural sugars - this process is similar to what happens when cereals are digested in the human body.
To create the finished rice milk product, Sunflower oil and a tiny pinch of sea salt are then added to produce the Original Rice Dream. Depending on the variety, other ingredients such as natural vanilla flavouring, cocoa powder etc may also be added resulting in a great tasting dairy alternative!
Rice Dream founder Robert Nissenbaum cared deeply about the relationship between diet, health, wellbeing and the environment. Almost 40 years later the company is still proud of its green credentials. Every grain of rice used to make Rice Dream is sourced from our growers in the fertile Po Valley in Northern Italy.
Buying locally gives us the quality and traceability we insist on, whilst greatly reducing the number of miles the rice has to be transported, thereby minimising our ecological footprint.
All Rice Dream products come in recyclable Tetra Pak cartons. The main material in our packaging is cardboard that is produced exclusively from wood fibre from sustainably managed forests. This type of packaging can be transported with minimal environmental impact compared to bottles, as far fewer lorries are needed. Tetra Paks are now being collected for recycling by some local councils in the UK. For more information visit the Tetrapak website.
The Tetra Pak packaging used for Rice Dream has been awarded FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) accreditation, meaning it complies with the highest environmental and social standards. Look out for the FSC logo which will be appearing on all Rice Dream cartons. For more details visit the FSC website.
In September 2009 we moved to a new environmentally friendly office and warehouse building. It was constructed in part from local timber, with is sealed with natural paints and oils. We get as much of our electricity as possible from solar panels, with the rest coming from renewable sources. All rainwater is collected and used. Where possible our employees use trains rather than planes, and cars with low CO2 emissions. Our low carbon footprint is fully offset by supporting a project in Rajasthan, Northern India.
